The Washington Post: Tourism is booming in the nation’s capital. So why aren’t hotel jobs?

Amidst the rise in tourism in Washington, D.C., hiring in District hotels has not kept at the same paste. In fact according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the hotel industry’s share of the job market has been trending downward for 17 years. “We have a very vibrant, financially successful industry, but it’s just not throwing off a lot of employment,” said John Boardman, executive chairman of local hotel union Unite Here Local 25. Experts believe limited service options and the reliance on technology has caused the slowdown of hiring.
